Connectivity

Use mobile phone tethering with your Kindle

A phone hotspot can give your Kindle a temporary Wi-Fi connection when you are traveling or away from your usual network.

Before you begin

  • Confirm that your phone plan allows a personal hotspot or mobile hotspot. Your carrier may count Paperyx activity against your mobile data allowance.
  • Keep your phone close to the Kindle and, when possible, connect the phone to power. Hotspot use can drain the phone battery quickly.
  • Have the hotspot name and Wi-Fi password ready. Use a password; do not leave the hotspot open to nearby devices.

On an iPhone

  1. Open Settings, then Personal Hotspot. On some iPhones, open Settings, Cellular, then Personal Hotspot.
  2. Turn on Allow Others to Join and note the Wi-Fi password shown on the page.
  3. On the Kindle, open Settings, then Wi-Fi & Bluetooth or Wireless, and choose Wi-Fi Networks.
  4. Select the iPhone name, enter the hotspot password, and wait for the Kindle to show that it is connected.
  5. Return to the Kindle Web Browser and open Paperyx.

On an Android phone

  1. Open Settings. Look under Network & internet, Connections, or a similarly named network section.
  2. Open Hotspot & tethering or Mobile Hotspot, turn on the Wi-Fi hotspot, and note its network name and password.
  3. On the Kindle, open Settings, then Wi-Fi & Bluetooth or Wireless, and choose Wi-Fi Networks.
  4. Select the phone hotspot, enter its password, and wait for the Kindle to connect.
  5. Return to the Kindle Web Browser and open Paperyx.

Android menu names vary by phone maker and Android version. Search the phone Settings app for “hotspot” if you cannot find the option.

When you finish

  • Turn off the phone hotspot so unknown devices cannot keep trying to connect and the phone does not continue using extra battery.
  • Remember that opening mail, files, news, or attachments can use more mobile data than simple task or calendar pages.
  • If the Kindle reports a captive portal, a sign-in page, or an insecure network instead of your phone hotspot, stop and verify the network name before continuing.
